Ex-Illinois Police Chief Gets Prison in Fraud Case

The former chief of police for the Chicago suburb of Countryside has been sentenced to more than two years in federal prison on mail fraud, money laundering and tax evasion counts.

Timothy J. Swanson also was a deputy with the Kankakee County Sheriff's Office. Federal prosecutors said Friday that he also was sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay nearly $230,000 in restitution and more than $55,000 in back taxes.

Prosecutors say Swanson created a tax-exempt organization called Illinois Regional Air Support Service to operate two helicopters for law enforcement use. Officials say he asked for contributions to the organization, which he then spent on personal purchases.

Swanson pleaded guilty to the counts in January. He must report to prison on Aug. 11.
