Police in Elgin should have body cameras by next summer.
Commander Ana Lalley tells the Daily Herald Elgin police have received a $250,000 federal grant and the city will match it from drug asset forfeiture money. Lalley says the department has until September 2017 to use the money.
Elgin officers have been testing body cameras as part of a pilot project since September. Lalley says the city will put out a request for proposals and buy the cameras with hopes of having them by summer. She says the cameras will first go to officers who deal directly with the public.
Lalley says it hasn't been decided if all 180 officers will get a camera or if they will share.
Chicago police and the Lake County Sheriff's Office also received federal grant money.
