Mayor Daley’s son Patrick has been placed on inactive duty by the military while he deals with an orthopedic issue.

The undisclosed ailment, which will require surgery, was discovered during medical examination in advance of his redeployment with the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, says the Sun-Times’ Michael Sneed.

"It was shocking news to him," said a source close to Daley told the columnist. "But in the process of preparing for his deployment overseas, a military medical checkup disclosed he had a serious orthopedic problem."

Patrick Daley, an avid body-builder, could return to active service after the surgery.

He’s been a soldier since 2004 and completed a tour in Afghanistan in 2008.

Patrick's mother, Chicago's first lady Maggie Daley, recently underwent surgery of her own to alleviate pain in her leg relating to cancer.
