Cubs Cleared of Wrongdoing in Maddon Tampering Probe

Major League Baseball’s investigation into tampering charges against the Chicago Cubs, stemming from the hiring of manager Joe Maddon, has concluded with no finding that the team acted improperly when hiring him last offseason.

The league issued the following statement on the matter:

“Major League Baseball has concluded its tampering investigation regarding Joe Maddon’s departure from the Tampa Bay Rays and his subsequent hiring as manager of the Chicago Cubs. The investigation produced no finding of a violation of Major League Rule 3(k) on Tampering.”

The Cubs were accused of tampering by the Rays after Maddon opted out of his contract following the 2014 season. The opt-out clause was triggered when Rays G.M. Andrew Friedman left the organization and joined the Los Angeles Dodgers, and a short time after Maddon left he was interviewed and hired by the Cubs.

The Cubs and Maddon’s agent Alan Nero have denied any impropriety throughout the investigation, with Nero saying that the Cubs demanded copies of the paperwork that Maddon filed to dissolve his contract with the Rays.
