Chris Sale Helps Young Fan After Life-Threatening Injury

Chicago White Sox pitcher Chris Sale has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons this summer, but on Monday, an awesome story about his charitable side was revealed.

Earlier this year, a pitcher at Victor J. Andrew High School by the name of Tyler Coleman was struck in the head by a line drive while pitching for his school. The line drive, according to a column in The Daily Southtown by Ted Slowik, caused bleeding in Coleman’s brain and nearly killed him, but he recovered from the injury and is now preparing to go back to high school this fall.

While Coleman was in the hospital recuperating from the injury, Sale called him and invited him to a White Sox game:

“When people told me I was too tall to be a pitcher, I’d say, ‘Yeah, well look at Chris Sale. He’s tall and left handed like me.’ So when he called me at the hospital, I couldn’t believe it. He told me to stay strong, sent me a White Sox bag filled with autographed souvenirs, and invited me to a game,” the Lurie blog quoted Tyler as saying.”

Tyler did end up going to a White Sox game on Sale’s dime, spending nearly a half an hour with the ace pitcher before the contest.
