Chicago Police Shoot Man in Stolen Vehicle During Traffic Stop

A passenger was also arrested, and police found a loaded firearm in his waistband

A Chicago police officer shot a man in a stolen vehicle during a traffic stop Saturday night after the man allegedly drove the car toward the officers.

Officers stopped the offender at about 7:45 p.m. in the 7800 block of South King Drive during a high-risk traffic stop on a stolen vehicle, police said. As they approached the car, the driver reversed it into another car and then accelerated the vehicle toward the officers.

The officers say they were boxed in by the offender and stopped at a red light, and one of the officers fired two shots into the vehicle. Police say the officers were in fear of their lives.

The driver was struck by the bullets and transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in stable condition, police said.

A passenger was also arrested, and police found a loaded firearm in his waistband.

No other injuries were reported.
