Chicago Fire Department Hired Few Minorities in 2014

Only 7 percent of new hires this year were African-American

The Chicago Fire Department hired far more whites than African Americans this year, raising concerns again that the department isn't doing enough to become more diverse.

Out of the 462 firefighters and paramedics hired this year just 33 are African American, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago said the department will seek to increase the number of blacks when more than 23,000 applicants take the entrance exam in December. He said the department has aggressively tried to attract more minority applicants.

Some African-American aldermen said they're frustrated and argue the numbers suggest the city doesn't have a plan to increase minority representation.

The department was ordered three years ago to pay millions of dollars to black applicants who were not hired.
