Chicago-Area Teen Advances to Spelling Bee Semifinals

One of eight Chicago-area teens to compete in the 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee has advanced to the semifinals.

Aniket Nuthalapati, a 14-year-old student from suburban Buffalo Grove, correctly spelled camouflage and auriphrygiate to advance to the semifinals, which are set for Thursday.

According to his biography on the National Spelling Bee’s website, Nuthalapati enjoys volunteering with community service ventures, playing football, swimming and playing the cello. He considers Mahatma Gandhi to be his role model and said he plans to study pediatrics in college.

In his journey to the national competition, Nuthalapati correctly spelled the word “gabion” in his local spelling bee.

The semifinals are set to take place Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern Time. The championship finalists will be announced after Round Six. The finals are set for 8-10 p.m. (ET) Thursday.
