Catalytic Converters Stolen From Vehicles in Jefferson Park

Area North detectives recommend residents park in well-lit areas, and purchase sensitive vehicle security systems

Police are warning about catalytic converter thefts in the Northwest Side Jefferson Park neighborhood.

Thieves usually steal the parts off of vehicles parked overnight, police said. After catalytic converters are removed, vehicles sound loud and gravelly when started.

Area North detectives recommend residents park in well-lit areas, and purchase sensitive vehicle security systems, police said.

Vehicle owners can also purchase catalytic converter theft deterrent systems, or ask a trusted muffler shop to secure the part to the car’s frame, police said.

Anyone who sees suspicious people or vehicles -- especially vans or trucks double-parked on the street with the engine running -- should note the license plate and call 911, police said.
