Boy, 14, Stole Car With 88-Year-Old Woman Inside, Dropped Her Off at Home: Police

An investigation is ongoing and charges are pending

A 14-year-old boy arrested for allegedly stealing a car with an 88-year-old woman sitting in the back seat dropped the woman off at her home before fleeing to Chicago, police said.

The woman’s family told authorities they had parked their car outside a Park Ridge store in the 900 block of Touhy Avenue before running inside to make a quick purchase. They had left their 88-year-old family member in the rear seat, but when they returned, the car and the woman were gone.

Park Ridge Police said they followed a lead to Belmont and Harlem in Chicago, nearly 7 miles away, where they found the stolen vehicle. The vehicle was stopped in the 4800 block of North Austin and a 14-year-old boy was arrested.

The woman, however, was not in the vehicle and that’s when officers learned the boy had dropped the woman off at her home.

The suspect was transferred into the custody of the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center overnight, police said.

Detectives are coordinating the investigation with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and are currently in the process of filing a charge of Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking against the suspect, according to police.
