SIU Student's Body Recovered Near Beach

The body of a college student who went missing Wednesday at 31st Street Beach was recovered Thursday morning, police said.

Mahlik J. Harris, a senior at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, was home for a family reunion when he decided to go swimming with his step sisters and was unable to return to shore, according to the Chicago Sun-Times

He was reported missing around 10 p.m. Wednesday. 

A Coast Guard helicopter searching the area found something in the water around 7 a.m., according to Police News Affairs. The Police Marine Unit recovered Harris' body around 7:25 a.m.

Chicago Police are conducting a death investigation, according to News Affairs.
