ALBANY, Ind. — A small single engine plane from Michigan crashed this afternoon in a corn field in eastern Indiana after authorities say its pilot became disoriented and then unresponsive.

Indiana Department of Homeland Security spokesman John Erickson says two F-16 fighters from the Indiana Air National Guard escorted the plane. It later lost altitude and crashed on its own without military intervention near the town of Albany about 10 miles northeast of Muncie.

Officials say the pilot was the only person on the plane, but did not immediately report on whether the pilot survived. Television helicopter images showed the wreckage strewn in a tree line and a corn field.
