It's been an emotional rollercoaster for a Park Forest family who were told that a family member had died while serving in Afghanistan only to learn three days later that he was alive.
Now they're mourning again, having gotten word that Sgt. 1st Class Edgar Roberts has died in the Intensive Care Unit of the National Naval Center in Bethesda, MD.
"Here we are grieving again," sister Rose Roberts-Alexander said Monday, according to the Southtown Star.
Roberts' family had been told that the soldier had died six weeks after being injured during a June 26 roadside explosion in Afghanistan. Officials later determined that Roberts was still alive and was recovering in the ICU.
He ultimately died from his injuries on Aug. 17, the Department of Defense confirmed.
The 39-year-old Gulf War veteren was assigned to 810th Engineer Company, Georgia National guard, in Swainsboro, Ga. and lived in nearby Hinesville.
