Melissa Etheridge Files To Officially End Domestic Partnership

Melissa Etheridge is making her split with ex Tammy Lynn Michaels official and legal.

The rocker, 49, filed a Petition for Dissolution of Domestic Partnership in L.A. County Superior Court Friday, People magazine reported. In the petition, Etheridge mentioned irreconcilable differences and asked that Michaels, 35, not be rewarded financial support by the court. She is also asking for joint custody of their 3-year-old children.

In response, Michaels wrote her in blog on Saturday about being blindsided by her ex-partner's recent action: “SMACK!!!!!!!!!!!!/FILE FOR DIVORCE!!!!!!/even though we both promised/agreed/handshook/pinkyswore.” She later added: “her broken promises/
told to me by/headlines.”

In April, Etheridge’s rep told People that the singer and Michaels had broken up after nearly nine years. The now-former couple registered as domestic partners in 2005. Michaels gave birth to twins Miller and Johnnie in 2006.

Etheridge had told Oprah Winfrey that the separation was “mutual,” although Michaels wrote in her blog, “I did not go anywhere, honey. And you and I both know it.” She also added, “Please stop telling the press it was mutual.”

Currently, Etheridge is on the road as part of her "Fearless Love" tour this summer.
