“Dirty Dancing” Choreographer to Direct Remake

Baby is headed back to the big screen.

Liongate studio said Monday that it is remaking the 1987 hit “Dirty Dancing,” The Associated Press reported.

Kenny Ortega, the choreographer behind the original film starring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, has signed on to direct its remake. Ortega most recently directed Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” documentary.

According to EW.com, “Dirty Dancing” was shot on a $6 million budget but went on to gross $214 million worldwide. It featured Grey as “Baby,” a young, wealthy dance student who falls in love with her teacher, played by Patrick Swayze.

While a sequel “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights” fizzled with a different cast, Ortega said in a statement he looks forward to discovering “the next breakout triple-threats” with the franchise's remake.

Deadline.com reports the film will be a “high priority” for Lionsgate.
