Prepare for Ground Assault: Star Wars Films To Be Released on Blu-ray

That disturbance in the force you just felt was a universe of "Star Wars" geeks exploding with joy over the latest news -- all six "Star Wars" films will be released on Blu-ray DVD in fall 2011.

It will be the first time the films have been offered in a high-def home format and they will naturally include documentary features and previously unseen footage.

George Lucas announced the news from the Star Wars Celebration V convention in Orlando, Fla. (with Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher on stage no less) over the weekend and gave an interview to the New York Times with the joyous news.

It's been a long wait for a community which prides itself in being cutting edge technologically. But Lucas said to the Times that he did not want to be the first in the marketplace for the high-definition home format, or even too early. We wanted to ride the established waves.

“We’ve been wanting to do it as soon as we possibly could, but we just wanted to do it when enough people would be able to buy it and see it,” Lucas said.

Original sales of "Star Wars" on VHS were comparatively slow because Lucas went too quickly into the market -- causing Lucas to learn this lesson the hard way.. We can be assured of "Star Wars" Blu-Ray mania when these finally hit the shelves

And while there is controversy (Lucas will release the updated versions of the film which feature changes made to the original), there will mostly be devout Star Wars love. Especially when geeks can ogle deleted scenes and new commentary.

Given that the event in Orlando was sold out to 21,000 people -- many in there favorite Stars Wars outfit -- you can imagine there is a community that desperately needs something new to celebrate.
