A. Philip Randolph, president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the nation’s first major Black labor union, was slated to give the keynote speech at the March on Washington in 1963, but “in his infinite wisdom,” Randolph passed the baton to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose “I Have a Dream” speech continues to inspire people today.
