Shaw Scores Twice as Blackhawks Throttle Coyotes 6-1

Teravainen, Kane both score as Blackhawks finish off homestand in style

After two straight disappointing losses for the Chicago Blackhawks, they came out like a team on a mission as they blasted the Arizona Coyotes by a score of 6-1 on Tuesday night at the United Center.

Andrew Shaw responded to his benching in Sunday’s game against the Dallas Stars by scoring two goals in the game, and he was joined on the scoresheet by Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Teuvo Teravainen, and David Rundblad. Antti Raanta made 35 saves to get the win for the Hawks in the opening half of a back-to-back set.

The game started out well for the Blackhawks, as Lucas Lessio was sent to the penalty box early and Chicago capitalized with a power play goal. Brent Seabrook made a big play at the point to keep the puck in the zone, and eventually it worked its way to Toews in the middle of the ice, and he ripped a shot past Mike Smith to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead about seven minutes into the contest.

Six minutes later, the Blackhawks added another goal to really get things going in their favor. This time it was Bryan Bickell getting things started by winning a puck battle behind the net, and Teravainen threaded a perfect pass to the front of the cage for Shaw, who flipped home a wrist shot to make it a 2-0 game.

Just four minutes into the second period, the Blackhawks finished killing off a penalty and were able to score yet another goal. Brad Richards fired a wrist shot off of Smith’s blocker, and Kane was there to collect the rebound and deposit a one-timer into the back of the net for his 200th career NHL goal to put Chicago up by a 3-0 margin.

Things continued to go well for the Blackhawks later in the period as a Hawks rookie made a big impact. Teravainen found an open seam up the ice thanks to Bickell charging the net, and while his high shot was stopped by Smith, the rookie collected the rebound and knocked in a shot for his second career goal and a 4-0 lead for his Blackhawks.

With about two minutes remaining in the second period, the Coyotes got on the board. Michal Rozsival pinched in a little bit too much, and Lessio got in behind him on a 2-on-1 rush and fired a shot past Raanta to make it a 4-1 game.

A little over a minute later, the Blackhawks got another goal as Shaw scored his second tally of the evening. Duncan Keith made a strong play at the point to keep the puck in the zone, and Shaw instantly made a break to the net. Keith found Shaw in stride with a pass, and Smith couldn’t keep the shot in front of him as the Blackhawks seized a 5-1 edge heading into the second intermission.

The third period transpired with little fanfare on either side of the ice, as both teams seemed resigned to the outcome. The Blackhawks did get a goal with about six minutes left in the contest from Rundblad, who took a feed from Kane in the middle of the ice and fired a bouncing slap shot that evaded Smith and put Chicago up by a 6-1 margin.

The Blackhawks will finish off their pre-All-Star break schedule when they take on the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night in Pennsylvania.
