Cubs and Marlins Honor Stoneman Douglas Shooting Victims

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo delivers an emotional speech at a memorial vigil honoring victims of Wednesday’s school shooting in Florida.

The Chicago Cubs are in South Florida to open the MLB season, and before they took the field they honored the victims of last month’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting.

The Cubs and Marlins both wore special patches bearing the initials “MSD” on their jerseys for their Opening Day game on Thursday, and before the game both teams wore t-shirts with the Stoneman Douglas logo on them.

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, a graduate of the school, has been outspoken in recent weeks on the need for action in the wake of the shooting. The shooting took 17 lives earlier this month, and has prompted a wave of national conversation about potential gun reform in the U.S.

Earlier this spring, the Cubs wore Stoneman Douglas hats during a spring training game, auctioning the caps off for charity. Rizzo also left the team after the shooting to go speak at a vigil honoring the shooting’s victims.
