Cubs Slugger Kris Bryant Named NL Player of the Week

Bryant hit five home runs as the Cubs went 5-2 over the last week

It was a huge week for the Chicago Cubs, and the driving force behind their surge in the standings was honored by Major League Baseball.

Kris Bryant, who set a new Cubs record for most home runs in a player’s first five MLB seasons this week, was named the National League Player of the Week on Monday for his strong performance over the last seven days:

Bryant batted an even .500 over the course of the week, hitting five home runs and driving in 13 RBI’s for the Cubs.

Bryant’s power surge was also a big part of the reason why the Cubs were able to score 47 runs in a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates over the weekend. That total is the highest the Cubs have managed in a single series in 125 years, according to team historian Ed Hartig.

Bryant and the Cubs, who are currently two games out of the Central Division lead, will take on the Cincinnati Reds beginning Monday night in a three-game set at Wrigley Field.
