Chicago Rescue Dog Finds New Home After Viral Transformation

The small rescue dog whose furry transformation quickly went viral has finally found a loving family

It’s not hard to see the happiness radiating off Ellen as she prepares to head to her new home.

After several weeks of rehabilitation, the small rescue dog whose furry transformation quickly went viral has finally found a loving family, and four-legged friend to go home with, according to Sue Naiden with the Trio Animal Foundation.

Once described as a “clump of pungent urine-soaked matted fur," 2-year-old Ellen’s journey to finding a home hasn’t been easy.

The young pup was first discovered walking as a stray on the South Side of Chicago and was taken to Chicago Animal Care and Control in July.

Introducing Punky! Punky came to the shelter when her former owner's landlord wouldn't allow pets. She's a shy gal with a sweet little meow, and although she prefers not to be picked up, she won't turn down soft pets (especially forehead and cheek scratches). Since she's a senior cat, she has a calm demeanor and is perfect for a quiet household.
Meet Sweety, the most beautiful girl this side of the Mississippi! Sweety came all the way from a shelter in Starkville, MS to find her forever home. She is a laid back girl with so much love to give. Being a senior dog, Sweety is looking for a home where she can retire and live in peace and quiet. Being a little weary of other dogs, Sweety would be better in a single dog family. However, she loves all kinds of people, young and old, and actively seeks out whatever affection she can get. If you're looking for a gracious girl to cuddle up with on the couch, Sweety may just be the perfect pup for you!
Introducing Bonifacy! Quite a character, Bonifacy came to the shelter when his former family was moving and couldn't take him along. Bonifacy is a handsome, fun guy who has a lot to say! He loves to "talk" to get your attention and once he does, he shows you what a playful, charismatic guy he is! Bonifacy can playbite and gets a bit rough when over-stimulated, he would not do well in a home with young children or people with thin skin. He LOVES playing with other cats and would do best in a home with another young, very active cat who he can wrestle with. If you're looking for someone with lots of personality, Bonifacy is your guy!
This little guy is Dillon! Dillon is a 6-year-old Chihuahua mix. He loves being held and pet and is one enthusiastic pup! It is recommended that Dillon be put in a home with no other animals or small children.
This is Kitty the cat. This affectionate guy love belly rubs and is a purrr-ing machine! He was an owner surrender but he's a wonderful, adorable cat that will make a great addition to any home.
Jinxy is a gorgeous girl who came to the shelter under the saddest of circumstances -- her owner passed away and left her all alone. Jinxy is an independent girlie whose world has been turned upside down and she doesn't know why. She still is getting used to the busy adoption room, yet she remains quiet and curious. Jinxy would love a new home of her own where she can relax and enjoy live, won't you come and meet her?
Pineapple is a sweet, snuggly gal. She's worried here at the shelter but seems to take comfort in a warm lap. She's food motivated so adopters should plan on using treats and kibble as a training tool. Basic manners training may help boost her confidence. Her desire to nestle in your lap is rather irresistible.
AP
Please meet Bubbles! This beautiful girl came to us when her former owner was moving and couldn't take her along. Bubbles is a bit scared here at the shelter and can start off a little shy, but give her some soft pets and the warm purr begins! She is such a sweet girl, she will bump her head into your hand for more and more attention. A quiet home where Bubbles can relax and settle in will help her lovable personality blossom. Bubbles is currently being housed in foster care on a "shelter vacation" but will be back soon! If you're interested in meeting and potentially adopting this lovely gal, contact her foster team at: foster@anticruelty.org
Zaha is a very active and fun young dog who will need plenty of help to burn off her considerable mental and physical energy. She approaches most people with loose wiggles, though occasionally seems wary, so she may need some support in order to feel better if she becomes uncomfortable with someone or something. She has played well with plenty of pups here, though she can sometimes become quite loud and reactive in the presence of dogs...she especially may become frustrated and aroused when there is a lot going on around her. Like many adolescents, she will benefit from consistent boundaries and guidance while she learns how to better control her impulses and cope with frustration. Zaha could be a great companion for an active adopter who can invest the time and energy to guide and train her.
Introducing the lovable, huggable Mittens! Mittens came to the shelter when her former owner could no longer care for her. Mittens is a sweet, cuddly girl who has a lightly playful side. She is calm and laid back, and will be a phenomenal feline addition to the family. Cuddly and snuggly, stop on by and meet this wonderful girl.

Meet Benny. Benny is a bit of a special needs pup but he is full of love and is a real sweetheart. Benny is 10 years old and was transferred to Chicago from another shelter. He arrived with a severe dental problem and now only has one tooth left. He will need a soft food diet and a family that can tend to his needs and give him lots of love.
Max is a coooooolll cat. Not only is this guy beautiful, but he is also quite the sweetheart! He starts out shy but warms up nicely with patience. It is important to note that he is not a cat for a household with children since he is wary at first and does not enjoy being picked up. Max is coming out of his shell more and more each day and is beginning to get very playful with his toys. Max lived with a female cat in his previous home. If you're looking for a sweet cat who also has an independent side-come say hello to Max!
AP
Yoda is quite a charming young dog. He's super social with people and will help himself to a lap or shoulder, depending on his starting height. He's food motivated and will settle down with a bone, or walk about exploring his environment. He has not been very active here, though that may change once he's settled in his new home. Yoda will need to be an only dog in his new home. While he ignores other dogs when on leash he will become reactive if approached by another dog. Adopters should be aware of this and completely avoid dog parks or play groups, and begin positive reinforcement training in an effort to alter his response to other dogs.
Meet Ollie! Ollie is 9-year-old cat and is wonderful. He just wants a lap to sit in and a good home. He is declawed and in great shape.

Meet Magic! Magic is a friendly guy who loves to get attention. He is very strong and active for his age, and will require a physically capable owner willing to meet his exercise needs. Magic would benefit from some training and boundaries to help him learn about personal space; as sweet as it is that he wants to be a lap dog, he should learn that brute force is not the way to get there. Due to his strength and level of physicality at this time, a home without small children is recommended.
Snuggles is a very pretty 4-year old gray tabby. Her striping is beautiful and her eyes are an absolutely amazing green! Snuggles is a sweet, calm and gentle girl who is a little on the shy side, but come and visit her and she loves the attention!. Snuggles came to the shelter with her "sister," Cliffie, when their owner was moving and couldn't take them along. You may find Snuggles hiding beneath the papers of her cage, but don't let that deter you, beneath those papers await one of the sweetest girls in town!
Introducing Pishtachio! A very pretty girl, Pishtachio came to the shelter under the very saddest of circumstances -- her owner passed away and left her all alone. Pishtachio is an incredibly affectionate girl. She can be a little nervous being picked up, but she absolutely LOVES being petted! Pishtachio is so sweet and will offer rather vigorous head butts for attention and treats! Pishtachio will be an ideal companion and will be wonderful to come home to each night.

Charlie is a fun, energetic little guy. He's very social and curious, running up to people to say hi or prancing about a room exploring. He was not interested in resources offered during his evaluation so adopters will need to find out what motivates him. Charlie will need regular playtime to help channel his energy; basic manners training will help introduce a vocabulary and impulse control. While Charlie is charming and friendly with pretty much everyone he meets, he has shown aversion to being handled by a veterinarian, so adopters will need to be aware of this and prep their own vet before visits (he may need to be tranquilized, restrained or otherwise for routine exams) while also working on counter-conditioning his emotional response to a veterinary clinic.
Pepper is a studly, vocal tabby who was brought to us when his previous owner could no longer care for him and his friend Tink (#22053480). He is a tad shy here at the shelter, but he is anxious to adjust in his forever home. Please visit this bachelor and you might just meet your perfect match!
Petite and pretty, Roberta came to us as a transfer from another shelter. Roberta is a calm, gentle and quiet girl who is friendly and affectionate. Roberta prefers to be petted than held and is a huge fan of catnip toys! Roberta has some corneal scarring to her left eye, but it won't slow her down from looking for you to cuddle with.
Brady is a lovely girl who came to the shelter when her former owner mentioned that Brady doesn't like children. Brady is a sweet, gentle girl who is calm and quiet. She does have a lightly playful side and enjoys batting around a fun kitty toy every now-and-then! A quiet home where she can relax and enjoy her life will be ideal for Brady.
Meet Jade (she may be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!). Jade is a super jock. She is smart, pretty and intense. She will require daily aerobic activity and clear boundaries. She likes to get physical and can get mouthy when excited. Basic training is strongly recommended to improve overall self control and manners.

Sequoia is quite a spunky little gal! She loves to play with toys and could run around amusing herself for hours. A young terrier, Sequoia is quite high energy and will need plenty of exercise to fulfill her needs. She also exhibits some typical teenage behaviors and will need appropriate structure and boundaries in place to help her work on them. A home with no small children is recommended due to her reactivity and mouthiness.
Introducing Tyson! A tall, very handsome guy, Tyson came to the shelter when his family was having a new baby and with all the time they needed for baby, they didn't have time for Tyson. This very nice boy is quite the flirt -- rubbing up against everything in sight hoping to get your attention and possibly a pet or two! She was later transferred into the Trio Animal Foundation’s medical and adoption program. Her fur was so thick and matted employees couldn’t tell if she was a male or a female.

“Flies and gnats swarmed around the pup and what appeared to be the dog’s back legs dragged on the floor and left a watery trail… just like a snail,” Naiden wrote on the Trio Animal Foundation’s Facebook page.

Shortly after she arrived, 8.5-pound Ellen was groomed, and her dramatic transformation took social media by storm.

The grooming process took an hour and a half, and at least 2 pounds of fur were shaved away.

[[87356452, R]]

“The amount of grooming tools that [the groomer] had to use to break through the hard shell of fur was unbelievable,” Naiden wrote. “The first time that she could feel the touch of my hand on her newly shaven back… She looked me in the eyes and it was as if she was saying thank you… Her past abuse was literally being shaved away.”

After her shave, Ellen was given a bath, another trim and was taken to the vet, where she underwent some tests and received vaccinations. She was taken to Naiden’s home for rehabilitation while she awaited a permanent family.

Hundreds of hopeful adopters flocked to the foundation’s website to put in applications.

The foundation’s rescue division, Project Rescue Chicago, narrowed their selection for Ellen’s new home to three possible families and ultimately chose a family with another young dog that quickly befriended Ellen.

“Ellen’s eyes lit up, and she ran right to him,” Naiden wrote. “It was love at first site and she made it very apparent that this was the family that she wanted to call her own… it was then that our mighty girl picked her forever home.”

Naiden called Ellen’s rescue one of the foundation’s “proudest accomplishments.”
