President Barack Obama has rejected House Speaker John Boehner’s backup bill aimed at averting the “fiscal cliff,” insisting that the “plan B” Boehner said he would proffer still doesn’t cut it and defending his own proposal. At a press briefing Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said the president had “come more than halfway” toward a compromise, and in a statement earlier in the day, the White House said Boehner’s plan “doesn’t ask enough of the very wealthiest in taxes and instead shifts the burden to the middle class and seniors.” Obama added that he remained hopeful that he and the House GOP could reach a compromise in their wrangling over how to stave off the “fiscal cliff,” which will prompt a flurry of spending cuts and tax hikes Jan. 1 if no deal is reached. Boehner had said earlier Tuesday that he was readying “plan B” — which would cancel tax increases on everyone earning $1 million or less, while allowing tax increases on those earning more than that — because Obama had yet to offer a balanced package of revenues and spending savings. On Monday, the White House proposed a $2.4 trillion deficit reduction package, including $1.2 trillion in new revenues and $1.22 trillion in spending reductions.
