A southwest suburban woman convicted of swindling $95,000 from an elderly man by pretending to have cancer was sentenced to five years in prison Tuesday.
Pebbles Miller, 28, first met the 80-year-old victim at a gas station in June 2012. Shortly after, she told the man she had cancer and needed money for treatment, the Cook County state’s attorney’s office said in a statement.
Over the next five months, the man met Miller several times and gave her a total of $95,000 from his personal bank account, prosecutors said.
When the man ran out of money, Miller contacted Catholic Charities and asked the organization for money for her treatment, prosecutors said.
She was arrested after the organization contacted police, according to the state’s attorney’s office.
Miller, of Justice, who was previously convicted of felony theft, was sentenced to five years by Judge James Obbish on Tuesday, prosecutors said.
