26-Year-Old Woman Killed in Northwest Side Crash Identified: Family

The woman swiped another car, lost control of her vehicle and drove into oncoming traffic

The family of Joanna Balbuena said the 26-year-old was the victim of a fatal crash in the Logan Square neighborhood early Sunday morning. NBC 5’s Emily Florez reports.

A 26-year-old woman who was killed in a crash outside of a fire station in Logan Square early Sunday morning has been identified by her family.

The family identified the victim as Joanna Balbuena and said she has a 7-year-old daughter. Balbuena worked as a volunteer with school children, they said.

Balbuena was driving southbound in the 2800 block of North Pulaski at about 2 a.m. when she swiped another car and then lost control. She then drove into oncoming traffic and ended up in the northbound lane, according to police news affairs.

Three cars in total were involved in the crash.

Balbuena was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead, according to police news affairs. No other injuries were reported.

Police are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash.

The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the death.
