Chicago Sky Snag Williams, DeShields in 1st Round of WNBA Draft

The Sky owned the third and fourth overall picks in the draft

The Chicago Sky had the rare opportunity to grab two top of the draft selections in this year’s WNBA Draft, and they have picked Diamond DeShields and Gabby Williams with the third and fourth overall picks, respectively.

The Sky, who acquired the third overall pick from the Atlanta Dream in a swap last year, took DeShields with the selection. DeShields, whose father Delino played for the Chicago Cubs, is currently playing abroad in Turkey, averaging 16.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game with Cukurova.

DeShields turned professional last year, but was ruled ineligible for the WNBA Draft. She averaged 17.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game during the 2016-17 season with the Tennessee Lady Volunteers.

Williams, a small forward out of UConn, averaged 11 points, eight rebounds, and five assists per game with the Huskies, and was widely considered to be one of the best all-around players in this year’s draft class.

The Las Vegas Aces selected A’ja Wilson out of South Carolina with the top overall selection in the draft, and the Indiana Fever took Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell with the second pick.

The Sky also own the 28th overall pick in the third round of the draft, which is taking place at WNBA headquarters in New York.
