Train Derails in Earlville; No One Hurt

EARLVILLE, Ill. -- A freight train carrying coal has derailed in the northern Illinois community of Earlville, causing problems for passenger trains.

Spokesman Steve Forsberg from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. says the eastbound train derailed just before noon Monday. No injuries were reported.

Forsberg says 17 of the locomotive's 130 cars were affected. Crews plan to work overnight to clear the tracks.

Some of the cars are badly damaged, coal spilled onto the tracks and trains are backed up for blocks in the community of nearly 2,000 people.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Maglieri says the company has canceled one passenger train to Quincy and is rerouting several other lines by providing bus service.

The derailment's cause is under investigation.
