3 Shot on Near North Side, Police Say

Three men were shot at a Near North Side peace event, and organizers are disappointed that the event, designed to welcome children back to school, was marred by violence. NBC 5’s Lexi Sutter has the latest details. 

At least three people have been shot aat a "back to school" event on the city's Near North Side, police say. 

Event organizers say that a group of young men began fighting at the scene in the 300 block of West Division, and one of them opened fire, striking three bystanders who were not involved in the altercation. 

A 54-year-old man was shot in the upper right leg, a 43-year-old man was shot in the left leg, and a 28-year-old man was shot in the back, police said. 

Two of the victims were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in stable condition, police said, and another, the 28-year-old, is in critical condition at Northwestern, according to authorities. 

According to a police spokesman, a person of interest was taken in for questioning by authorities, but authorities say that the gunman remains at large.
