Thousands Without Power After Heavy Overnight Rain

As of 7 a.m., 8,000 customers were without power in the city of Chicago and south and western suburbs

The Chicago area saw heavy rain and flooding in some areas early Friday morning. NBC 5’s Lauren Petty reports.

Thousands of Chicago area residents were left without power Friday morning following a night of heavy showers and flooding.

As of 7 a.m., 8,000 customers were without power in the city of Chicago and south and western suburbs. A ComEd spokesperson told NBC Chicago they hope to start working on getting the power restored at 8 a.m.

Steady, widespread rain blanketed the Chicago area overnight, with lightning seen in some areas.

A Flash Flood Watch was issued Thursday at 7 p.m. for Cook, DuPage, Boone, DeKalb, LaSalle, Lee, Ogle, Kendall, Winnebago, Lake, Grundy, McHenry and Will Counties that will remain in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday.

Luckily, drier conditions are on the way – for a little while at least. Friday will see a mild, muggy, mostly-cloudy morning area-wide.

Scattered sunshine will warm and dry up the area by noon, bringing temperatures to the mid-70s, before another round of showers are expected to hit Friday evening.
