Suspicious Package Prompts Evacuation at O'Hare

A United Cargo building at O’Hare International Airport was declared safe after an investigation concluded a suspicious package, which was found to contain computer hard drives, was not dangerous early Thursday.

The package was found and the cargo building was evacuated about 12:40 a.m., police said.

The box swabbed positive for explosive materials and the city’s police Bomb and Arson Unit was called to the scene, according to United Airlines spokeswoman Karen May.

Investigators opened the computer hard drives and discovered there was no explosive device, May said.

Shortly before 3 a.m., the investigation was completed with negative results and the building was “rendered safe,” police said.

No injuries were reported.
