New Trial Scheduled for Former Streets, San Boss

New trial set to begin July 6

Former Department of Streets and Sanitation Commissioner Al Sanchez will be retried on corruption charges this summer, a judge ruled Tuesday.

A federal judge last month ordered a new trial after ruling that a key witnesses arrest record and gang affiliations hadn't been disclosed to defense attorneys as they should have.

Sanchez was a longtime leader of Mayor Daley’s Hispanic Democratic Organization.  He is accused of using "city jobs as currency" and manipulating the city's hiring process to benefit political workers.

Sanchez has denied that politics played a role in getting HDO members jobs.
