Blago Sets April Special Election for Emanuel's Seat

A special election to fill the seat of U.S. Rep. Rahm Emanuel has been set for April 7, the governor's office announced today.

A special primary election for the seat will be held March 3.

Emanuel resigned from his seat Jan. 2 after accepting the post of President-elect Barack Obama's chief of staff.

Emanuel was the representative for the Fifth Congressional District in Illinois, which includes much of Cook County.

By state law, the governor is required to set the date of a special election for a U.S. House seat within five days after the vacancy is created. [Read the governor's writ of election]
