South Shore Drive Closed at 67th Due to Water on Street

High water levels forced the closure of the street

Snowfall across the Chicago area made for a messy morning commute. Lisa Chavarria reports.

Water levels along Lake Michigan prompted police to shut down part of a street Monday in the South Shore neighborhood.

The southbound lanes of South Shore Drive remain closed due to high water levels and icy conditions, but northbound lanes have reopened, according to Chicago police.

By 5 p.m., police anticipate that a southbound lane will reopen, but water management officials will remain on scene until the street is completely cleared.

Police were asking people to find alternative routes and to avoid the area. It was unclear how long the closure would last.

A spokesperson for Office of Emergency Management and Communications could not immediately be reached for comment.
