Bystanders pulled a man from a vehicle engulfed in flames after a deadly crash on Chicago's South Side early Monday, jumping into action in a dramatic rescue effort captured on video.

Authorities said the crash took place at around 3:30 a.m. in the 8300 block of South Yates Blvd in the city's South Chicago neighborhood.

A man driving a Toyota Corolla westbound ran a red light and struck a Chevy Impala in the intersection, according to police.

Fire officials said the Corolla then slammed into what appeared to be the garage of a nearby home.

The driver of the Impala, an adult male, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality and further details, including his age and identity, were not available.

The Toyota driver was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, officials said.

It's not clear how or why the car lost control and crashed. Video posted to Facebook showed at least three people pulling a man from the vehicle as flames from the front of the car lapped at the windshield. [[485143121, C]]

Another video showed the chaos of the crash, panning from one of the cars flipped on its side to the debris around the intersection as first responders put out the fire, shut down the road and investigate the scene. [[485145791, C]]

The intersection remained closed for several hours as police continued to gather evidence.

No one is in custody in connection with the crash and it was unclear if charges would be filed.

The investigation remained ongoing.
