A crash in suburban Elmhurst early Tuesday morning led to the arrest of three armed robbery suspects who were all taken into custody following a manhunt in the western suburbs.

The single-vehicle crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. near North Avenue and Willow Road. As police arrived, three occupants fled the vehicle on foot, Elmhurst police said.

The people in the vehicle were suspected of participating in armed robberies in Sycamore and Carol Stream overnight, authorities said.

Several police departments joined in a search for the suspects, eventually taking two into custody. A firearm was also located at the scene, police said.

A third suspect remained “at-large” Tuesday morning and Elmhurst police said they continued to search the area. Several hours after the crash someone called 911 to report a suspicous person in the 100 block of East Lake Frontage Street and the third suspect was found hiding under a home's outdoor deck.

That suspect was taken into custody just after 8 a.m., police said.

The Sycamore Police Department reported an armed robbery at a 7-11 store in the 400 block of West State at 11:15 p.m. Monday. Two suspects entered the store with a firearm and a struggle with the clerk ended in gunfire, with the clerk suffering a gunshot wound to the lower body, police said. The 45-year-old clerk was last listed in stable condition at an area hospital and was expected to survive.

The suspects fled the scene in a white small- to mid-sized vehicle. The Elmhurst Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle matching that description when the vehicle was involved in a crash, Sycamore police said.

The suspects are also believed to be involved in an armed robbery at a gas station at North and Gary Avenues in Carol Stream just after midnight.
