Police Release New Details on Woman Fatally Shot in Long Grove

The Lake County Sheriff’s office confirmed officers were responding to a scene near Tall Oaks Drive north of Promontory Drive

A 47-year-old woman was fatally shot in what appeared to be a domestic-related incident in Long Grove Monday afternoon, police said.

The woman, identified as Barbara Bell Powers, was shot and killed just after 1 p.m. inside a home in the 5400 block of North Tall Oaks Drive in the northwest Chicago suburb, according to authorities.

The Lake County Sheriff's office said Powers was married to a 51-year-old man who lived in the same home. The two were in an argument and during the argument, police say Powers "retrieved a firearm from an upstairs bedroom."

"The woman fired a shot at the man, which missed the man, but the round lodged into a wall," a statement from the sheriff's office read. "The man and woman then struggled over the firearm at which time it discharged, and a round struck the woman."

An autopsy determined the woman died "as a result of a gunshot wound to the head," according to Lake County Coroner Howard Cooper. A toxicology report was pending, Cooper said.

“We have been in contact with Ms. Power’s family and our deepest condolences go out to them during this difficult time,” he said in a statement.

Police said the husband was cooperative during their investigation and was released from custody during the overnight hours Tuesday.

An investigation remained ongoing, however.
