Twin Baby Boys Dropped Off at Suburban Fire Department

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, an emotional mother dropped off her twin baby boys at the Phoenix Village Fire Department, the fire chief said.

The young woman dropped the boys off about 1:30 a.m. and they were both in good health, Chief Mickil Smith said. The boys are between six and 10 months old, but Mickil is praising the mother for her decision to bring the children to a safe place.

"We see kids left on the side of the road, we see children left in dumpsters, we see children frozen solid outside and this mom made a responsible decision," Mickil said. "Although it may not be popular, it was probably the best decision for her as well as those kids."

The twins were taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey.

The chief wants people to know about the Safe Haven Law, which allows a person to give up an unwanted infant 30 days or younger anonymously.

The children are more than 30 days old, the cut off for Illinois law allowing mother's to give up their children at a firehouse.

A spokesperson for the state's attorney's office said they were not aware of the case and Phoenix police did not immediately respond to request for comment.
