Northwest Suburban Native Lands Hero Role in ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops III'

One of the biggest video games of the season features a northwest suburban native as its hero.

Actor Andy McDermott grew up in Palatine and graduated from Northwestern University in 1998. His high school alma mater, Fremd High School, proudly tweeted a picture of the newest game.

“They gave me kind of a test shoot and had just a bunch of you know pretend rifles and weapons and made a lot of real mean faces,” McDermott told NBC affiliate WWBT about the auditioning process.

McDermott’s resume seems to have prepared him for the lead role in “Call of Duty: Black Ops III.” He served as a police officer for the Phoenix Police Department for about eight years and also has a third degree black belt. On top of that, he played professional soccer for seven years.

McDermott told NBC 5 Chicago he, his wife and four children moved from Arizona to Los Angeles three years ago to follow his “action hero dream,” seeking roles other actors like Tom Cruise or Jason Statham would go for.

“Call of Duty: Black Ops III” was released Nov. 6. It earned $550 million during its opening weekend, according to Forbes.

“I had no idea how big this game is globally,” McDermott told NBC 5 Chicago.

The Palatine native has played roles in several shows including Hawaii Five-0, Scorpion, and Sons of Anarchy.
