New Federal Charges Filed Against Indicted Chicago Police Officers

The indictment accuses Xavier Elizondo and David Salgado of conspiracy to violate civil rights and obstruction of justice

Chicago Police officers gathered for a stern announcement by Superintendent Eddie Johnson after two officers were charged with stealing money and drugs. NBC 5’s Charlie Wojciechowski has more.

Additional federal charges have been filed against two Chicago police officers already accused of lying to judges to obtain search warrants and then stealing cash and drugs from the properties they searched.

The indictment on Wednesday accuses Xavier Elizondo and David Salgado of conspiracy to violate civil rights and obstruction of justice. Elizondo is also accused of trying to persuade Salgado to conceal evidence.

U.S. District Judge Matthew Kennelly scheduled a Tuesday arraignment on the new charges for the officers.

Regarding the new charges, Salgado's attorney, Michael Petro, said it appears to be coming to a time when if you put on a police uniform you're conspiring to violate the rights of citizens at all times.

Elizondo and Salgado have been relieved of their police powers and suspended without pay.
