Mayor On Maggie's Cancer: “She's a Fighter”

First lady doing "very well" after outpatient surgery

Mayor Richard Daley on Thursday said his wife is doing "very well" after having outpatient surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital a day earlier as part of her ongoing treatment for metastatic breast cancer.

A biopsy of a bone lesion on her spine was performed Wednesday.

Maggie Daley in July of 2006 had surgery to remove a tumor in her right breast. Since then, her cancer has been stable and well-controlled using modern therapies.

"You have to understand, cancer affects every family.  It doesn't matter who you are," Daley said Thursday, adding that his wife is "a fighter."
