Chicago’s First Lady, Maggie Daley, had to cancel an event Monday because of lingering pain in her leg.
"Maggie is not feeling well and can't be with us, but she cares so much about this issue she sent her first born," said Mary Ellen Caron from the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services at the After School Matters event at the Chicago Cultural Center.
Daley is recovering from surgery on her leg to reduce the risk of fracture posed by a malignant tumor. Doctors inserted a rod into her leg in early March.
Her doctor, Steve Rosen, insists "she's doing well and off all pain meds." He says he's not sure why Mrs. Daley is not attending the event, but suggested "she's fine."
Maggie’s daughter Nora stepped in at the last moment to speak in place of her mom.
Officials from City Hall down played her absence.
"Sometimes she makes it, other times she doesn't,” said Mayor Daley’s press secretary Jackie Heard. “She's not laid up somewhere. Quite frankly, it's her leg that still needs rehab. She's using crutches and sometimes isn't up for getting around with them."
Mrs. Daley has made a public appearance since having her surgery. She spoke in late March at a different After School Matters event.
