1 in Custody After Suspicious Package From Neighbor Spurs SWAT Response in Little Italy: CPD

A suspicious package delivered from one neighbor to another spurred a SWAT and Bomb Squad response on Chicago's Near West Side Thursday night and ended with one person in custody for questioning, police said.

Police originally said a person only described as “male” barricaded himself in a building near the intersection of Taylor and Loomis streets in the Little Italy neighbhorhood. Streets in the area were closed between Loomis and Laflin.

The person in custody was "possibly the person who created the package" but no explosives had been found, according to Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

SWAT officers in bulky green tactical gear could be seen in the area, along with uniformed police officers toting rifles alongside a swarm of firefighters.

Yellow crime scene tape created a perimeter around the block where fire trucks and at least one armored vehicle idled.
