Embattled Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios could be facing an uphill fight to get re-elected, according to a new poll.
The new poll, conducted by Our Revolution Illinois/Chicago, shows Berrios’ opponent Fritz Kaegi with a 44-27 lead over Berrios in the assessor’s race.
Kaegi has been endorsed by Our Revolution and has picked up other endorsements from Congressman Robin Kelly and Danny Davis, among others.
“Voters are tired of pay to play and corruption by Joe Berrios and are ready for new leadership,” Our Revolution Illinois/Chicago co-chair Clem Balanoff says.
The Berrios campaign says this poll does not reflect their own surveys, which show Kaegi is in third place. Berrios leads in those polls, according to the campaign, and Andrea Raila is in second.
Raila’s petitions have been challenged and it’s not clear yet if she will appear on the ballot.
Berrios, who is also the head of the Cook County Democratic party, has faced intense scrutiny for how the property tax assessment process is done in the county.

Despite that pressure, Berrios still has the support of numerous high-ranking Democrats, including Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Secretary of State Jesse White and Congressman Luis Gutierrez.
The poll was conducted February 6-7, of 757 automated telephones of likely Democratic Cook County primary voters.
