CPD Failing to Comply With State Gun Laws, IG Finds

A report released Wednesday by Chicago’s Inspector General’s Public Safety section finds the Chicago Police Department did not comply with state gun laws. According to the report, CPD did not comply with the reporting requirements under the Firearm Owners Identification Card Act. The report suggests people who posed a “clear and present danger were not properly recorded,” the Inspector General’s office said. “And that firearms may have been returned to individuals whose FOID cards would have otherwise been revoked,” the office said in a statement. “In a time of continuously high gun violence in Chicago, full compliance with the FOID Card Act provides CPD a key mechanism to keep firearms away from those who are not legally entitled to their possession.” Mary Ann Ahern reports.
