Overnight storms flooded a Kane County roadway, creating a 10-foot wide sinkhole. Two vehicles landed in the hole overnight. The road has been closed indefinitely.
A 10-foot wide sinkhole cutting across a rural road in suburban Kane County swallowed a car and pickup truck early Tuesday after thunderstorms drenched the roadway.
Two people had to be extricated from a Ford Taurus that drove into the sinkhole at about 3:50 a.m. at Thomas and McDonald roads, Kane County Sheriff’s deputies said.
The vehicle was completely below ground level when it landed, deputies said, and Juanita Pineda, 41, and Benjamin Hernandez, 15, both of Elgin, were trapped inside.
Before police arrived, a Chevrolet pickup truck drove over the first vehicle and landed in the sinkhole. The driver of the truck, 25-year-old Irvin Morero of Elgin, was treated and released at the scene.
Pineda and Hernandez were transported to Kishwaukee Hospital in Sycamore with apparent non-life threating injuries, police said.
Kane County Sheriff’s deputies noted this is a rural area with no streetlights. The section of road became completely washed out, police said, likely because of heavy storms that poured as much as three inches of rain on the area.
Thomas Road between Middleton and McDonald roads will be closed indefinitely because of damage to the roadway.
No tickets were issues as a result of the crash.
