No one could ever accuse Chicago's weather as being subtle.
High heat led to the closure of North Avenue Beach shortly after 6 p.m. Monday.
Paramedics responded to the beach at around 5:30 p.m. after people started falling down and becoming light-headed, according to Fire Media Affairs Dir. Larry Langford.
Four people were taken to area hospitals, including an 18-year-old man who was admitted in critical condition, according the Chicago Sun-Times. The man experienced heat exhaustion and was found unresponsive, Langford said.
Firefighters had initially began hosing off people to cool them down, using a 2-1/2 inch water line.
Temperatures in the 90 degree range were recorded across the Chicago area Monday.
Six people were also hospitalized for heat exhaustion at Memorial Day parades in Plainfield and Lockport, the Chicago Tribune reported.
