Final Plan for Quincy Veterans' Home to Be Unveiled

State officials are ready to display the final master plan for redevelopment of the Illinois Veterans' Home in Quincy.

The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs has scheduled an open house Tuesday at Lippincott Hall on the campus. The public may view the plan from 4 to 7 p.m.

Gov. Bruce Rauner's administration will rebuild the campus because of water infected with the bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease.

Outbreaks have occurred every year since 2015 and 14 people have died from the flu-like illness.

The $230 million plan begins with replacing decades-old, corroded plumbing that provides a breeding ground for legionella bacteria. It can sicken a person who inhales the bacteria from water vapor.

Lawmakers last spring approved $53 million to start.

Quincy is 311 miles southwest of Chicago.
