Ongoing debt ceiling discussions isn't the only thing on Sen. Dick Durbin's agenda these days.
The Mark Kirk counterpart on Monday announced the availability of federal funding for repairs to the Loyola CTA station, as well as the future Red Line modernization and extension projects.
"Despite the budget problems in Washington, and there are many," Durbin told reporters, Red Line repair is necessary. The Loyola El stop in particular, Durbin said, is in "desperate need of repair."
About $11 million of the $18 million project will come from federal funds.
CTA board chairman Terry Peterson called the project "timely maintenance" that's long overdue. Still, it's a multiyear process, Peterson said, and won't happen overnight.
A Loyola station rehab adds to the overhaul of school facilities in Rogers Park. The former Gentile Center is currently being renovated to allow for a more competitive arena for sports and music events.
