Upset Driver Fatally Hits Man With Car After Party in Gary, Witnesses Beat Driver

Witnesses removed the driver from his vehicle and beat him

A man who became upset during a party in Gary, Indiana was beaten by witnesses after he allegedly hit two people with his vehicle, killing one of them.

The crash happened around 9 p.m. Tuesday in the 3800 block of Massachusetts Streets after witnesses say the man became upset during a “social gathering” and got into his vehicle. The man then allegedly put the vehicle in reverse “at an accelerated rate of speed in a circular pattern,” hitting two people and three vehicles, police said.

Ronald L. Mayes, 48, of Gary, was hit by the car along with 22-year-old Lonnie Hunt, also from Gary.

Mayes was transported to Northlake Methodist Hospital in Gary and later died from his injuries, police said.

Hunt was also taken to the hospital and was treated and released for “superficial injuries,” according to authorities.

Witnesses removed the driver from his vehicle and police believe he was then beaten by people who were at the social gathering, according to Sgt. Tom Decanter Jr. with the Gary Police Department. The driver was taken to Northlake Methodist Hospital and later transferred to Christ Advocate Hospital in Oak Lawn for treatment.

Police said charges are pending and the crash remains under investigation.
