A South Side family is mourning the loss of a young boy killed in a carjacking, just days before christmas. Police say 11-year-old Donovan Turnage was in an SUV with his father and brother when a carjacking suspect crashed into their car. It happened Saturday near 55th and Halsted. NBC5’s Michelle Relerford reports.
A Chicago school planned to open its doors Monday afternoon to hold a candlelight vigil for an 11-year-old killed in a car crash over the weekend.
Donovan Turnage, a student at Morrill Math & Science School, at 6011 S. Rockwell St., died Saturday after being thrown from a vehicle during a car crash on the city's south side. A school official said Turnage's father and brother, who were also in the vehicle, were OK physically and were expected at the 3 p.m. vigil.
The family has strong ties to the school; Both Turnage's brother and aunt work there.
School officials said the building was closed for the Christmas holiday but was opening special for the vigil. Counseling sessions for those in need were going to be made available and art supplies will be on hand so those in attendance can make cards.
Authorities said a 34-year-old man, Rockie Douglas, was being sought in connection with the crash.
