DePaul University Issues Safety Alert After Brutal Assault

Officials at DePaul University issued a safety alert Friday after a woman was brutally attacked on the school's Lincoln Park campus, just steps from the student center.

According to the alert, a woman was walking down North Sheffield Ave near West Webster Ave around 2 a.m. when she was grabbed off the street, forced into a nearby university parking lot and sexually assaulted.

Students said they were shocked and disturbed by the alert they received via email on Friday.

"I was walking out last night too with my friends right around that time so I guess seeing yourself in that position, it's really unfortunate and it really, really sucks that that could be an option for anybody," said DePaul student Leyla Dewey.

The parking lot is at the center of campus activity, with the student center, recreation center and St. Vincent DePaul church surrounding it.

"It's a pretty populated area," said student Marie Zahorik. "There's a lot of students so it is pretty scary and I live right across the street."

The victim is not affiliated with the university, officials said. There was no suspect description available on the alert, but DePaul Police ask anyone with information on the incident to contact them at 773-325-7777.
